20161213 182941

On Tuesday, December 13th local Girl Scout troops 1585, 415, 89, 2400 helped prepare kits for Happy Healthy Smiles, a 2-week-long oral health program aimed to help 1300 Kindergarten students throughout Mohave and La Paz Counties, as part of the local Oral Health Coalition currently under the direction of River Cities United Way's Ashley Wood.  The smile kits include a toothbrush, toothbrush cover, toothpaste, floss, a 2-minute timer, smiley pencil, and a Dr. Seuss "The Tooth Book".  The curriculum will include coloring pages, a visit from an oral hygienist or MCC dental student, a certificate and reward at completion. The program will roll out in February 2017 through local elementary schools.

The program is funded through River Cities United Way's "Kids Bright & Healthy Program" in partnership with the coin-box businesses and grant funding from Delta Dental Foundation of Arizona & La Paz/Mohave Oral Health Coalition.

Currently River Cities United Way works with the schools to provide students without dental insurance dental exams free of charge, and up to 50% of restorative care is covered in partnership with UniSource's "Energy Community Impact Grants.  Of the students that are assisted, there is a 50-60% rate of tooth decay that is found, our goal is to reduce those numbers by 10% by 2020.

22,685 people were helped saving $2.1M on prescription medication, an average of 41%.

13 K-12 students received dental referrals, 6 (47%) of which required additional work. The program saved those families an average of $109.79 per claim. 3 students received medical or vision care at an average cost of $83.33.

48 volunteers working 192 hours delivered oral health education and smile kits to 1,272 Kindergarteners, in 53 classrooms, at 20 schools, in 8 communities across 2 counties.
